Founders' Day of Giving 2019

Choose a giving level

The University was founded in 1919 as The School of Automotive Trades and opened under the direction of Major Albert Sobey to train engineering and management personnel. Harry Bassett, who became president and general manager of Buick, the legendary president of GM, Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., and our namesake, Charles F. Kettering, were all instrumental in the school's establishment. Today, we recognize these leaders as Kettering's four Founders.

Bell Tower

The Bell Tower, also called Carillon, was erected as a part of the campus expansion in 1969, built with funds donated by GMI/Kettering Alumni and friends. The carillon consists of 47 bells arranged in four octaves. The Kettering Carillon received the 1971 Honor Award for design from the Detroit Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Atwood Stadium has been an iconic landmark in the city of Flint for the past 90 years. The stadium, which opened in 1929, has hosted many memorable events, including rallies for political figures like John F. Kennedy, concerts for legendary bands like The Who, and University Commencement ceremonies. In 2013, Kettering took ownership of Atwood and restored the stadium to its former glory.

Kettering Football?

Yes, we once had an intercollegiate football team. Give the amount that reflects our first intercollegiate football win; GM Tech 20 - Detroit Tech 6!

Thompson Hall

In May of 1969, Frances Willson Thompson Hall opened as the on-campus residence facility. Thousands of students who have attended GMI and Kettering have lived in this hall. Make a gift for each of the 437 dorm rooms in Thompson Hall.

5th year Thesis

By 1945 General Motors Institute had added a fifth-year thesis requirement and had evolved into a full degree-granting university with a unique educational model. Today the Kettering Library houses 26,766 Theses published by thousands of extraordinary Kettering/GMI students. Make a gift in celebration of the fifth year times 100!

Co-op Program

By 1923 the School of Automotive Trades had grown to offer a full four-year cooperative education program enrolling more than 600 full-time students.

All about the AB

In 1926 there was a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Academic Building (AB) at the corner of Chevrolet and 3rd Avenues. The Academic Building was completed in March 1927 and the first classes were conducted in it.
